1.kasiaman am ta  tao  am, ori ya ipi-wa-wakay,

約2~3月 助 我們 達悟族 助  那個 助    種地瓜

Do you know that the month Kasiaman in the Yami calendar is the month to grow sweet potatoes?

3.[do dehdeh, o    kasiaman ang?]

處格 外地人  主格  約2~3月   助   

karahan am, manoma pa  o  ka-pa-nazasaz pa so wakay,

 然後    助    最先    先 主格     砍草        先 斜格 地瓜

na, beken a kasiaman, 不對 ori  a, kaowan,  

對了  不是  繫 約2~3月         那個 助 約1~2月

a t-om-onton do  kasiaman, kaowan  am,

助   接著      處格 約2~3月   約1~2月 助

mi ma-nazasaz so wakay,

去    砍草      斜格  地瓜

[譯:首先,先砍地瓜(的雜草), 哦,對了, 不是kasiaman月,是kaowan月

才對,kaowan的下個月是kasiaman月, kaowan月要先砍地瓜(園的雜

草)]

We first cut the weeds in the sweet potato fields. Oh, yes. That is not in the month Kasiaman (February to March) but in the month Kaowan (January to February). In the month Kaowan, we cut the weeds in the sweet potato fields.

4.karana am, kasiaman rana am, na, m-apos rana ori am,

 然後   助   約2~3月  已經  助  對了   結束   已經 那個 助

asleb-en rana ori, m-apos rana o  kawawan ori

 燒掉      已經  那個   結束   已經 主格  ?份     那個

a ipa-nazasaz ori am, asleb-en rana  o  ni-cibcib-an

When it was the month Kasiaman, oh, yes, after that month (Kaowan) was over, they would burn all the grass and reeds that they had cut down.

5.karahan am, kato na nolaw-an no kasiaman ori am,

 然後     助    就   它  出來     屬格 約2~3月 那個 助    

m-angay rana  pi-moa-n so wakay a,

  去     已經      種      斜格 地    助   

pa-napsapoat-an rana  ori  so tngeh no viao a,

    連根拔除        已經  那個 斜格  根  屬格 蘆葦 助

karahan am, a  ka-sa araw manga anak ko?

然後    助   助  一    天    親愛的  孩子 我  

ji a-ka-doa araw o   ma-nap-sapoat so  tngeh

確實     兩     天  主格    連根拔除     斜格   根

no  viao ya  a ka-pi-moa.

屬格 蘆葦  這  繫  然後種

[譯:接下來的月份是kasiaman月, 開始種地瓜前, 先挖除蘆葦根, 大概需要花一兩天的時間挖掉蘆葦根吧]

The following month is Kasiaman. Before planting sweet potatoes, they would dig out the reeds. It took approximately one or two days to remove the roots of the reeds.

6.no teyka rana ori am, a ka-doa araw am,

當   結束  已經  那個 助  助  兩個    天  助  

teyka rana ori am, a no ka-tlo araw am,

結束   已經  那個 助   助 若   三      天   助 

na, kasa vehan am zavok-en rana, zavok-en rana ori

對了  一     月   助    除草    已經      除草    已經  那個

manga anak ko, ori pa so  ka-zavok sia,

親愛的 孩子 我   那個 先 斜格    除草    它   

to pa mika-taz-tazogaw pa so  ori  pa ka-zavok sia.

就  先      冒新芽          還 斜格 那個 還    除草     它

[譯:兩天的時間除掉蘆葦根, 三天後, 哦,不對,(種地瓜)一個月後做第一次除草的工作, 地瓜差不多才長出新葉吧]

It took two days to remove the roots of the reeds. After three days, oh, no, that’s not right, (planting sweet potatoes), after a month, they would start their first weeding. By that time, the sweet potatoes might be sprouting new leaves.

7.ipi-roa so ka-zavok sia am, mika-sak-sakop rana ori a,

 第二次 斜格   除草    它   助      葉子長大一點    已經 那個 助

karahan am, ipi-tlo so ka-zavok sia am, 

 然後    助     第三   斜格     除草   它   助

amian rana  so asi  na, a tapino-an rana ori,

  有   已經  斜格 果實 它   助  覆蓋      已經  那個

am p-ehralay-an rana ori so  kan-en,

但     一併         已經 那個 斜格 飯,食物

[譯:第二次除草時,葉子差不多又長大一點,第三次除草時,就長果實(塊根)了,然後用旁邊的土將它覆蓋一些,也可以開始順便挖要吃的地瓜了]

   During the second weeding, the leaves would grow larger. During the third weeding, there would be fruits (roots). We would cover them with the soil on the side. At the same time, we could begin to dig out the sweet potatoes for food.

8.karahan na am, a no ipi-pat rana am,

 然後     它 助   助 若   第四   已經  助  

to rana ma-ngali-i ori manga anak ko,

就  已經    挖         那個 親愛的 孩子  我

ori   o  ni-moa no ka-kasiaman ang,

那個 主格 所種的  當   約2~3月     助

[譯:第四次除草時,就可以正式的挖地瓜了,那就是kasiaman月時所種的地

瓜]

During the fourth weeding, we would be ready to dig out sweet potatoes. Those were planted in the month Kasiaman.

9.ori ka-pi-wa-wakay no tao nokakoa,

那樣     種地瓜      屬格 人   以前    

ori ka-pi-wa-wakay da, ka-pi-ke-keytan da rana,

那樣     種地瓜       他們       種山芋       他們 已經

a  no ma-ci-ci-ciaw a tao a mavakes manga anak ko am,

助 若     聒噪的?      繫 人  繫  女性     親愛的  孩子 我  助

ori  o   ka-doa na,  ka  no  kaoran saon ya

那樣 主格  兩個   它    和  屬格  頂多    助   這

vazay da saon  no tao nokakoa am,

People were like that in the past, working hard to plant sweet potatoes and mountain taros. A diligent woman would be able to cultivate at most two sweet potato or mountain taro fields during that period of time. Males had to weed after planting yams at the beginning of the flying fish season.

10.曾:paka-ziak-en mo pa am!

11.no kaneman  am, pa-naha-taham-an da   o  ov-owvi

當 約11~12月 助       嚐吃           他們 主格   山薯

da  ya  do ikoa a, kato   da rana ngan-an sia

他們 這 處格 那個 助  然後就 他們 已經  吃       它 

do  k-asa amian a  i   i  ikoa ya amian ya,    

處格  一    冬天   繫 頓 頓   那個 這   冬天  這    

pikawkaod am, na, papa...na, paneneb am,

約4~5月   助  對了         對了 約3~4月 助  

vitosen da  na dang.

They would taste the new yams in the month Kaneman (November to December). The yams they grew would last for the whole winter for food. They would finish eating all the yams in the month Pikawkaod (April to May), oh, no, it should be in the month Paneneb (March to April).

12.o   ovi manga anak ko am, to ngian pa o wakay ang,

主格 山薯 親愛的 孩子  我  助   就   在   先  主格 地瓜 助

ano kehkah-an[1] rana ori  o  wakay am,

若   地瓜全挖掉  已經  那個 主格  地瓜  助   

pa-palit-an rana so wakay, to na vango-vangon-i

替換         已經 斜格 地瓜    就  它   不斷輪替    

no  wakay nokakoa  manga anak ko, 

屬格 地瓜   以前      親愛的 孩子  我

[譯:那個ovi和地瓜可以一直吃到不再長出地瓜和ovi為止。然後全部挖掉再種新的地瓜苗;種地瓜就是這樣,不斷的重覆這些過程]

We would harvest from the same yam and sweet potato plants until they stopped growing. And then we would dig them all out and replace them with new sweet potato plants. We would repeat the same procedures to grow sweet potatoes in the past.

13.karana am, toda vango-vangon ori a,

 然後    助    就      不斷更替    那個 助

no ji rana malasi o   wakay am,

若  不  已經   結果實主格 地瓜  助   

kehkahan   da rana ori manga anak ko,

地瓜全挖掉 他們 已經 那個  親愛的 孩子   我

wigwag-en da rana ori no ma-le-lma mavakes

 使荒廢    他們 已經 那個 屬格  懶惰的     女性       

 manga anak ko am, am no ma-owyat am,

親愛的  孩子  我  助    但 若   勤勞的    助 

adan a wagawag-en da ori, ta ji da  pali-palic-i

絕對  繫 使荒廢     他們 那個  因 確實 他們   替代    

so  wakay a, key-keytan sira ori pa-pal-palít-en da   

斜格 地瓜  助        山芋    等等  那個   替換           他們

do  dang manga anak ko.

處格 那裡 親愛的  孩子  我

[譯:地瓜田就是這樣, 若長不出地瓜了就全挖掉重種,除非你是個懶惰的女人,不想再種而任它荒廢; 但勤勞的女人,會繼續種植新的地瓜苗]

That is the way we grow sweet potatoes. If they don’t produce any new sweet potatoes, we will dig them all out and replant them. A lazy woman would not replant them and leave the field to grow wild, but a diligent woman would continue to grow new sweet potatoes. 

14.karana am, a no ma-wagwag ori am,

 後來    助  助 若     荒廢     那個 助  

to rana wagwag-a ori a,

就  已經  使荒廢     那個 助

ka-ngay rana mapa-palit so waka-wakay,

然後去    已經    更換      斜格   地瓜    

ta ya siciakoa ya, ya ni-pin-pa-mnek-an nokakoa,

因  助    現今    這   助     指定，佔有         以前

to mi-zangkap saon a mi-wa-wakay

就    普遍        助   繫   種地瓜

do  地  ta   ya am, nokakoa am,

處格    我們  這  助    以前    助  

ji ma-mnek-i  o  地  no  mika-t-at-atngeh-an

 指定,佔有  主格    屬格   各世系群,親族團   

a teye-sa so inawan ya,

繫  每一   斜格  生命   這

[譯:如果地瓜園荒廢了就讓它荒廢;想種時就重新開墾再重。但現在跟過去已經不一樣了,以前的人若不想再種了就任由它荒廢,世系群中若有人想要在那塊地種地瓜,那麼整地就可以用了; 但是現在的人都會把自已種過的地瓜園佔為己有]

In the past, if a sweet potato field was left uncultivated, they just left it that way. If they felt like growing something, they would re-cultivate it. But it is different now from the past. In the past, people left the field uncultivated if they did not want to plant anything. If someone in the clan group wanted to grow sweet potatoes in that field, they could freely use it after cultivating it. But people now claim the sweet potato field as their own property if they have cultivated it.

15.ta to mi-zangkap o mi-wa-wakay,

因  就      普遍    主格  種地瓜    

ta ma-o-oyat o  tao nokakoa a ra-rakeh am,

因    勤勞     主格 人   以前    繫    老人    助  

ma-o-oyat o todey mi-wa-wakay dang,

勤勞     主格 就     種地瓜        那裡

ta to sia  walá-walam kono manga anak ko

因  就 他們    休息       據說   親愛的  孩子  我

a ma-key-keyan do iney-naorod manga anak ko,

繫   守在一起    處格     前院      親愛的  孩子　我 

ma-nadeng kono, ji a-ni-ma-ni-sibo kono

靠背     據說    不    上山工作         據說 

a ni-panci ni akes mo a icialaw.

繫   說過   屬格 祖母  你 繫  已故的

[譯:你祖母說,以前的人,種地瓜並不普遍,只有勤勞的老人才會種地瓜,

但大部份的人都只會靠坐家裡的靠背石休息，也不會上山去工作]

Your grandmother said it was not very common for people in the past to grow sweet potatoes. Only diligent old people would grow sweet potatoes. The majority only leaned against their rock seats and rested. They would not go to work on the mountains.

 

[1] Kehkahan, 是指地瓜到後來再也長不出地瓜之後,就把地瓜連根除掉,再種新的地瓜叫kehkahan.。

The newly planted sweet potatoes are called kehkahan after the old potatoes are removed because they can no longer produce any fruit.
