In the month of Papataw (approximately May or June), before we go fishing, we will gather together at the ocean in advance. For fear of the taboo, we will not get on the boat in advance, or we won’t catch a lot of fish.

After gathering together, we will push the boat to the ocean and go fishing. However, after we push the boat to the ocean, we will not row the boat to go fishing immediately. We will wait for each other at the seahore near the reef. It’s not acceptable to go fishing in a hurry.

若 到齊 我們 已經 助 什麼 已經 主格 時間

After we catch the flying fish, we will tie it on the fishhook to be used to catch the dolphin fish. There is a Y-shaped bamboo on the boat, where we put the fishing line, because when we catch big fish, we cannot pull the fishing line directly from the side of the boat.

After pulling the dolphin fish up on the boat, we cannot tear down the fishhook directly from its mouth, because we won’t be able to take it out that way. We must put the bamboo pieces which have been chopped before into the fish’s mouth. After pushing the fishhook forward, we can take it out.

After taking out the fishhook, we will tie a new bait to catch another dolphin fish.

11.teyka namen rana zaksan am,

After tying the bait, we will throw it to the right side of the boat, but we must not throw it to the left side.

We only lay a short section of the fishing line because we are afraid with a long line we might catch a shark. If that happens, we will surely be dead.

If we find the flying fish bait shaking at the end of the boat, we will start to row the boat.

15.ano ji namen pa mangtoktoan manga anak ko am,

Then (the dolphin fish) will make a lunge to eat the flying fish. When the dolphin fish is eating the flying fish, we cannot pull hard on it. We should prepare another ten bundles of rope (fishing line) for laying.

若 用盡 那個 親愛的 孩子 我 助 止住 我們

就 跳躍 助 緊閉著 主格 口 它

After the rope (fishing line) is totally laid down, we start to role the line back. No matter how much the dolphin fish jumps, its mouth is always closed tightly.

Only very few people will be fooled by the dolphin fish to let it escape. When it escapes, you have to say, “Wish me better luck.” If the bait of the flying fish is eaten up, we will have nothing to catch the dolphin fish.
