Why is that? Because in the past, they were not that much like that to women, while older people were more that to men. Because in the past, the custom on the island was that men were the people they could count on, and the thinking at the time was, because men were the ones to bury the dead, they needed to go deep into the mountains to work. (meaning burying the bodies in the forest)

 

5.  iká-doa na am,

Secondly, when there are fights or wars on the island or the village, only men participated.

The third is, men needed to raise their family, farm, catch fish, and therefore they used to put more emphasis on men.

Every time that I think about the past, I cannot help but to tear up because women in the past were very unfortunate.

I also know that when I was little, I had six siblings, and I was the oldest one.

 

10.ikongo nokakoa, am-ian siciaikoa ya,

What we have now we didn’t have before. We did not have rice in the past; we at Jivalino (poor) cannot be compared with other villages because villagers in Jivalino don’t have fields.

nokakoa am, ma-lé-lma pa sira o tao a ra-ra-rakeh,

[:即使有大平原,但以前, 老人家都比較懶惰,而且沒有鐵棒(耕作工具);以前食物匱乏, 沒有工具, 因此種的地瓜很少]

Even though we had large prairies, but in the past, the old people were lazy, and didn’t have iron rods (agricultural tools).There was very little food, and not tools, and therefore very few sweet potatoes were planted.

 

12. no ma-ówyat   sira am,  nokakoa am,

In the past, even if they were very hard working, their products would be trampled by cows, and the harvest would not be good, leading to a lack of food for the Yami.

Every time we sat around eating, my mother would say this: “Hey, you, when you are sitting, have good posture.” “Oh, is that so,” I said. At the time I felt like I could accept that.

You are a female, so you must sit with your legs shut, your stomach tucked in like you have a belt on. You must not eat too much, because you are a female, and cannot be like a male, or eat as much as your little brothers.

 

15. ta o mehakay iya am,

     主格 男性      

sira am ya om-zat jiaten a asa ka vahay,

他們       保護    我們         

am ori ji mo to paka-rako-i so kanen mo,

        動綴--動綴 斜格 食物                      [:因為男生呢,他們是保護我們一家人的人,所以你不可以吃太多]

Because the males are the ones who protect our whole family, so you cannot eat too much.

 

16. ma-mízing ko nokanonang na am,

     動綴-聽到      當時       

ay, akmi so.., “ning a, na ika-koan so sang ang?”

      斜格             使-    斜格 那樣

[:當時, 我聽了這話以後, 就像...“,為什麼要這樣?”]

At the time, after hearing this, it was like… “Oh, why is it like this?”

 

17.karahan am, to ko mipa-hágnat am,

     後來           -漸漸長大

[:本來就是啊, 以後,你能做男人能做的事嗎? 你要埋死人嗎?你要開挖那座山來闢耕田地嗎? 如果有人欺負你,你打得過男人嗎?你要造船嗎?你要蓋房子嗎? 這些全是男人的工作,所以不要把自己想得比弟弟高]

That’s how it should be. In the future, can you do what men do? Will you bury the dead? Will you dig in the mountains to cultivate the land? If someone bullies you, can you outfight a man? Will you build boats? Will you build houses? Those are all jobs for men, so do not think yourself higher than your brothers.

 

19. ma-mízing ko o kma so sang am, onów-ned ko am,

     原來    確實     那樣

After I heard these words, I thought in my heart, “Ah, I see, they treat women like that.”

 

20. no k-om-an   namen am,

a ma-nozok so ara-ráko  a kanen,

動綴-  斜格 -大大的 

[:當我們吃飯的時候, 我看到我弟弟他們都去刺大大的食物[3]]

When we ate, I saw how my brothers would always go for the largest pieces of food.

 

21. no to ko i ma-nozok so to maci-tónton pa do avak am,

    動綴-  斜格   動綴-其次的       處格 中的

“ji ka mang-ap sang, ta ka vavánjian”,

     動綴-  那樣        女孩

[:如果我取了比大的小一點的食物,”你不可以取那個食物,因為你是女孩]

If I took pieces that were smaller than the largest ones, “You cannot take that food, because you are a female.”

 

22.ko-koan ko a ni-tozok rana ori am,

即便是   過去-    已經 那個 

to ko pa-óli-a    o   kma so sang, 

  使-退回-動綴 主格  斜格 那樣

ta  ikamo   ko o  iniapoan ko,

  不好意思 主格  父母親  

[:雖然我已經拿取了那個食物,但我還是放回去,因為我對父母親很不好意思]

Even though I had already taken the food, I still needed to put it back, because otherwise it would have been embarrassing to my parents.

 

23. ikongo o mi ko tozok-en ,

  什麼 主格    -動綴

[:那麼我該取什麼樣的食物呢?小小的,像是水份過多不太好的那種,才是我可以吃的食物。每當我們吃完飯的時候,我說:我吃飽了,謝謝爸爸,謝謝媽媽。實際上我根本吃不飽,所以我很瘦,好像只剩皮包骨一樣]

Then what food was I supposed to pick out? The smallest that had too much water and were not that tasty were the ones that I was allowed to eat. Every time we finished eating, I would say: I’m finished, thank you father, thank you mother. Actually I could not eat enough to be full, so I was very skinny, and looked like I only had skin over my bones.

I only had skin on my bones, because I could not eat enough, just like…. We didn’t have that many dishes, even when we had large (many) dishes. When they gave me a larger piece of crab, “Your meal, here, take it!” “Hey, why are you eating that one (the large one)? Why don’t you give it to your grandmother? How can a child eat such a large piece of food (side dishes)” This is the way to tempt a person and see if they are gluttonous.

“Is that so” I would say, and didn’t dare to eat it again. Every time that I got a larger piece of food (i.e., larger pieces of fish or crab), I would give it to…If my grandmother was not there, I would give it to my (deceased) father.

 

26. ori ji ko maka-kan-i so api-pia kanen,

使得--瘦瘦的   動綴--小時候

[:所以我小時候因為沒有機會吃好吃的菜而變得很瘦,瘦得可憐]

Therefore when I was small I was very skinny because I did not have a chance to eat good food, and I was so skinny it was pathetic.

 

27. no pa-vonong-en da (yaken) so i-yakan am,

      使-分配給-動綴 他們       斜格 動綴- 

ikongo ji vonóng-a, payret an, cin-cinapay an,

Every time we split the food, there was never a dish that was not split. Shells, taro leaf vegetables, everything was split.

 

28. no to ng-ian jiaken so ara-ráko a payret am,

      突然 動綴-      斜格 -大大的   田螺  

to ko yakan-an am, “mo yakan-an nia, mo koimo

  吃掉菜-動綴      吃菜-動綴       某人

If I was given the larger shell, after I ate it, “Hey, how can you eat the large shell? How can you not give it away (to the older people)? Ah, you are so glutonous. Are you really that glutonous?” At the time I felt embarrassed.

I only dared to eat the small ones, and all the big ones I would give the older people, evne if they already had food. Therefore I often said, “Ah, why am I a woman? Ah, why am I not a man? I was angry.”

Why am I a female? Being a female is terrible because you cannot eat good food.

When I said anything, my mother would say, “You are not like your companions, you cannot speak. In front of the crowd, females may not speak.” My mother said this.

Kanen so spa is defined as “eating someone’s chewed food” or “parent’s child”, the person eating someone’s chewed food is “a child”, and the person who chews the food to feed the children is the “parents.”

Mo koimo is used when you don’t want to call a name directly, reserved for young children or people without children, and is equivalent to “hey”. It is a more impolite term of address.
