Summer is the
season for fruit trees to bear fruit. What fruit is not available in the
summer? There are many kinds of fruit in season, such as banana, longan, and
breadfruit.

It only takes three months for the leaves of sweet potatoes to grow.
If you keep the sweet potato field weeded, it will not be harmed by rats.
Furthermore, if the soil is rich, sweet potatoes will grow so much that you can’t
finish harvesting. But, if the soil is poor, the harvest will also decrease. We
follow our ancestors’ steps to grow sweet potatoes.

We are
not the only ones who are afraid of being starved. The worry of starvation has
begun from our ancestors. They passed down their customs to our grand fathers
and then down to us. Such customs are passed from generation to
generation.

them. If there are too many to harvest or eat, they will rot. Sometimes they
will give away to relatives, so people who like to grow fruit are kind.

Other fruits, such as longan, are the
same. If there is no damage to the fruit, it tends to grow so much that we can’t
finish harvesting. Sometimes we would keep eating longan while harvesting it in
the mountain. We would stuff ourselves so much that we would have no appetite
for dinner.

When we returned to the village, we
would put the longans into bowls and send to relatives. Thus, in the season of
good harvesting, people would receive lots of food from others.

Therefore, those who did not plant
fruit trees (those who were lazy) could only envy others who did. This is why
someone had lots of gardens or grew lots of fruit trees while others did
not. This is why everyone was
different.

Many people are diligent but there are
also many lazy people. This is the situation on our island. People in every village
have different degrees of preference for working in the mountains. (One’s
diligence determines the number of gardens and fruit trees one has.)
